    HOT WHEELS

First, I must apologize for my long absence. I went to Japan back in November, and after my return, things just got busy at home, at work, and online – sometimes it seems like too much for just one Toyotageek to do.

But, I’m back to posting and I will try to keep to a more regular schedule for updating the blog.

    Now, on to the Toyotamobilia!

I’ll start out with some of the newer stuff I’ve acquired recently, and then I’ll backtrack and add items that I’ve gotten over the past few months.

    TOYOTA USA AUTOMOBILE MUSEUM
    Grand Re-Opening

Earlier today I attended the Grand Re-opening of the newly located Toyota USA Automobile Museum in Torrance California. The old museum was actually situated in the city of Gardena, a few miles away from the Toyota main campus. This past year saw a move from several storage facilities to a new location adjacent to the main Toyota campus which is on Western and 190th in Torrance.

More Than 100 Toyota Vehicles Featured

TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 2 — The Toyota USA Automobile Museum marked its “Grand Re-Opening” here today, with more than 100 models on display at its new, expanded facility.

The Museum features Toyota, Lexus and Scion cars and trucks dating back to 1958, along with more than a dozen historic racing vehicles.  A history of Toyota’s operations in the U.S. and around the world also is part of the Museum display.

“The museum reflects a vision Toyota has held since its founding nearly a century ago, to enrich society through building cars,” said Jim Lentz, president and chief operating officer of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. and a managing officer of Toyota Motor Corporation.  “It highlights the ways Toyota helped put America on wheels in the second half of the Twentieth Century and is developing fresh technologies for the future.”

Lentz was joined by local community leaders and dignitaries in ribbon cutting ceremonies.

Vehicles on display at the museum include:

    • A 1958 Toyota Crown, the first Toyota sold in America

    • A 1965 Toyota Corona, Toyota’s first high volume car in the U.S.

    • The 1967 2000GT, one of the stars of the James Bond movie “You Only Live Twice.”  A racing version of the 2000GT also is on display

    • Championship winning race cars including off-road trucks, IMSA Celica and GTP race cars and an Indianapolis 500 winner.

    • A 1986 Corolla, the first Toyota built in the U.S.  Several other serial No. 1 vehicles marking the launch of production at various U.S. and Canadian plants are also on display.

    • A 2000 Prius, representing the world’s first mass-produced gas/electric hybrid.

    • Original Lexus and Scion models first launched in the U.S.

The Museum is located at 19600 Van Ness Ave. in Torrance and is available for touring by appointment.  The Museum also is available for free use by community groups.

    TOMICAUSA

Last time I posted part 1 of my Tomica USA interview. Today I finally bring you part 2. More questions are answered…

    TOMICA USA INTERVIEW PART 2

    • Toyotageek: Besides packaging, are there any differences in the playsets that are for sale in Europe and the playsets we will have in North America?
TOMICA USA: The playsets has its dissimilarities between Europe and the United States.  Not only are the trains and accessory pieces different models, but the layout of the track is quite different.
    • TG: Many of the playsets are of a generic nature – i.e. “Pizza Shop” and “Car Dealership.” Is this due to licensing issues or can we expect Toyota & Honda dealerships or McDonald’s and KFC sets in the future?
TOMICA USA: Correct, due to not having licenses from fast food restaurants and convenience stores, our Tomica destinations are generic.  However, this does not mean we will not explore different licenses in the future.
    • TG: Can you tell us a little about the licensing factors when it comes to diecast cars?
TOMICA USA: The corporate office in Japan handles all the licensing for the diecast cars.  There are many Japanese vehicles in Tomica library, but since the company is growing to be global, we are also looking into more American and European cars.
    • TG: As it clearly states on the Tomica boxes the primary target consumer is kids age 4 and up, but are you also thinking about the adult collectors out there?
TOMICA USA: The Tomica line that launched in the US this fall is targeted for kids ages 4 and up, but we have not forgotten about our adult collectors.  We know Tomica collectors exist in the US and are always requesting for more single cars.  We have many great new items coming out and will appeal to both kids and adults.
    • TG: Although it is probably too early to even discuss, if the TOMICA line is successful here in the US, what can we expect to see next? Will there be single cars available? A lot of hard core Tomica collectors are asking this and would like to know if single cars are sold, if they will come on blister cards or in boxes (like in Japan)?
TOMICA USA: Single cars are definitely on our mind.  We want to be able to cater to our collectors, as well as allow kids to expand their playsets with more vehicles.  Blister cards and boxes are all possible ideas.  You will have to wait and see.
    • TG: Lastly, a lot of collectors want to know if we can eventually expect to see Tomica Limited Vintage sold in the US?

And so ends our interview with Tomica USA. I’d like to thank the staff at TOMICA USA for taking the time to answer my questions. As we can see, Tomy has their sights set to expand on a global scale and one of their products, Tomica, is at the forefront of this expansion. Only time will tell if they are successful in the USA, but from the products I have seen they should see success. Prices are good, and the playsets seem to have a lot of potential for creative young minds to play with. And not only is Tomica USA thinking of the kids, they seem to have the collector in mind too.

What will the future hold for us collectors? Only time will tell. Let’s hope that sales are successful and maybe we will see the product line expand in the near future!

The TOMICA USA website also went online this week, so make sure to stop by and check it out also.

    NEWS
    TOMICA USA

    TOMICAUSA

Earlier this year rumors were spreading that Tomica would be entering the European and North American markets once again. Soon after the rumors were confirmed, and by summer, Tomica products were popping up in Europe. Word through the grapevine was that Tomica would go on sale in the United States by the end of September.

As September started I was getting ready for the Japanese Classic Car Show which I volunteer at every year. About one week before the show I learned that Tomica USA would make their debut at the car show – fantastic news.  Unfortunately the day before the show it was announced that TOMICA USA wouldn’t have their display on time (it was stuck in another part of the country). On Sunday September 12th the car show took place, and while TOMICA USA did not have a display booth, they did provide the organizers with product to display and to be given away during the raffle drawings that took place throughout the day. By the end of the day there were a lot of happy adults and kids walking away with Tomica products.

It was my friend Jeff Koch that helped to arrange to have TOMICA USA at the Japanese Classic Car Show (Jeff is a writer for Hemmings, home to a number of automotive publications. He is also an avid diecast collector, and at one time worked at Johnny Lightning). I contacted Jeff to see if he could help me get in touch with TOMICA USA. Since I am active on the Tomca Fan Club forum and a few other diecast forums, I had an idea that it would be nice to do an interview with TOMICA USA and perhaps get a few questions answered. So, about 2 weeks ago I got in touch with the folks at TOMICA USA and while they were very busy getting ready for the official launch of their product line, they agreed to do an interview. I sent them a list of questions and patiently awaited their reply. Yesterday I received an email from TOMICA USA with answers to some of the questions and I’d like to share the answers here. I know this isn’t strictly Toyotamobilia news, but since I am a big fan of Tomica and since Tomica does make Toyota models, I felt it was worth sharing with everyone!

    I present to you my…

    TOMICA USA Interview Part 1

Toyotageek: After a 20 year absence, what brings TOMICA back to North America?
TOMICA USA: Tomy is looking to be a global market and enter many countries.  Tomica turned 40 this year and we believe this is one of Tomy’s strongest brands to penetrate the market first.  In the United States, we will be combining Japan’s Tomica diecast line with Pla-Rail’s train system, under the Tomica brand.  Tomica’s road and rail system is a unique product that will allow limitless building potential and appeal to boys of all ages.  In the past, Tomica was launched with only diecast cars.  We strongly believe the combination of roads and rails under the Tomica brand will appeal to kids and add much more excitement.  Tomica is the 1st brand in the process of introducing many more brands from Japan.

TG: Is a product list available for the first 27 SKUs (and is MSRP available)?
TOMICA USA: We have 100 Tomica display tables going into 100 TRU stores around the nation.  Each display table will have a brochure that contains all 27 items.  Our website, www.Tomica-USA.com is also scheduled to launch in October.

TG: When will the TOMICA-USA website open up?
TOMICA USA: www.Tomica-USA.com website is scheduled to launch in October.  We have a great site that will cater to the collectors as well.  There’s a sign up section where you will gain access to “My Garage.”  My Garage allows you to keep track of all the cars, trains, and Tomikids you have collected.

TG: On your Facebook page, there was news about a TV shoot. I assume this is for commercials? When can we expect to see them and will they be on You Tube?
TOMICA USA: The TV will begin airing October 11 nationwide.

TG: It has been rumored that Toys R US will be the sole retailer – is this true?
TOMICA USA: Yes, Toys R Us has the exclusive rights to Tomica this year.

TOMICA USA also has a Facebook page – please check them out for more up-to-the-minute news.

    NEW STUFF
    TOMICA

Directly on the heels of one package from Japan comes another. Just one day after I received Makoto-san’s package, I received another package – an envelope from my good friend Agent KM1. This was another unexpected surprise… Inside the envelope was a Tomica Shop bag (with something inside) & Tomica Shop flyer, a NHK Character Shop bag (with something inside), and a couple of rice crackers – yummy!

    IMG_4670.JPG

Here’s a look at the TOMICA SHOP flyer. On the front cover is the newest Tomica Shop vehicle, a Toyota 2000GT, and the Tomica Shop vehicle selection for the months of August & September. The inside two pages highlight many of the Tomica themed goodies just for kids. And the back cover includes a look at the latest Toy’s Dream Project selection and the new Tomica Shop Point Card vehicle.

    MOTORSPORTS
    Package from a Friend

A few days ago I received a package from my friend Makoto from Utsunomiya Japan. I wasn’t expecting anything so I was curious as to what he could be sending me. The description on the shipping label simply read “magazines & cup.”

    IMG_4609

The box was pretty big for just a cup and some magazines, so I wondered what the heck could be inside. Once I opened the box, this is what I found – another box, along with a copy of Nostalgic Hero magazine and an old Japanese Celica owner’s manual….

    IMG_4614.JPG IMG_4615.JPG

And when I opened this box, I finally saw what kind of “cup” was inside – a trophy cup! Now I was really confused and wondered why a trophy cup?

    IMG_4621.JPG

Inside the Nostalgic Hero magazine I found a letter from Makoto. Since I don’t read Japanese I had to have my wife translate the letter for me. As it turns out Makoto won this trophy and wanted to share it with me. You see, Makoto regularly races a Toyota Sports 800 and the trophy is from this year’s JCCA CLASSIC CAR FESTIVAL FUJI JAMBOREE which was held on April 11 at the Fuji Speedway. There were 306 historic cars participating in the various races. Makoto took part in the S65 Race (which is for cars made before 1965). Competition was tough, with the likes of Triumph, Lotus, Skyline, Alpine, Jaguar, Isuzu Bellet, Renault, Datsun Z & Austin Healy.  Makoto-san took 2nd place in his class.

    IMG_4663.JPG

    IMG_4664.JPG

    IMG_4661.JPG

    IMG_4657.JPG

I’m still not exactly sure why Makoto-san sent me his trophy cup, but I do appreciate the gesture and the ‘cup’ will have a place of honor in my collection.
